Three Hacks to Keep Skin Glowing This Winter

Winter is one of the trickiest times to keep your skin in tip-top shape. Cold outdoor weather in most climates plus more time spent in harsh indoor heating usually spells out dry skin that tends to look dull. We reached out to Hayley Kim, board-certified nurse practitioner at Telo Labs, to share her expert tips to keep your skin looking fresh and radiant throughout the winter.

When It Comes to Moisturizing, Timing Is Everything

Moisturizer is a winter staple—but it isn’t one size fits all, and a lot of its success depends on when you apply it. “The prime time to apply your moisturizer is when skin is still damp after showering, rather than after towel drying,” says Kim. “Your skin is like a sponge and more permeable to lock in your moisturizer and skincare products when slightly wet.” As for what kind of moisturizer to use, Kim recommends seeing a skincare professional and discussing your specific needs first. “There's a wide range out there and some can make you break out if they're not appropriate for your skin,” Kim cautions.

Don’t Skip Daily Sunscreen

Another surprising winter skincare tip: slather on the sunscreen! “Sunburns may seem like a risk only in the summer, but the sun’s ultraviolet rays permeate all year round, even through clouds, fog, and glass windows,” Kim warns. “Snow and ice can reflect the sun's rays, so you have the risk of being hit with UV rays from two different angles, simultaneously! Sun damage is the biggest factor that accelerates how old your skin looks, so it's best to shield from those rays.”

Try a Laser Facial That Reverses Sun Damage

Winter is the perfect time to indulge in skin treatments or procedures. But what’s the best way to pick a treatment that fits your needs? “When considering a medical-grade laser treatment, always go to a reputable place with board-certified nurses or medical doctors, who will analyze your skin and make sure you are an appropriate candidate for a laser treatment,” Kim tells us. “Fractional CO2 lasers like the CoolPeel (offered at TeloLabs.com), for example, help treat sun damage, uneven skin tone, texture, fine lines, and enlarged pores. Winter is the perfect time to try one of these. Post-treatment, you should avoid extended sun exposure for 1-2 weeks.”
