These Are All the Screenings to Catch at the Tribeca Film Festival
The Tribeca Film Festival runs this year from April 24 to May 5 at multiple theaters throughout the city, and for any film obsessives out there, now is the time to buy your tickets. But with over 174 feature-length films being screened, it can be a bit daunting to sort through which ones are must-sees. Below, we rounded up the buzziest films right now, made by everyone from small time directors, to multiple Academy Award winners (prepare to hear a lot about Danny Boyle much-anticipated film "Yesterday").
"The Apollo"
The opening film of Tribeca, "The Apollo" is a documentary from Oscar-winner Roger Ross Williams ("Music by Prudence") that explores the 85-year-old history of the Harlem theater. The main action of the film centers around the first staging of Ta-Nehisi Coates' "Between the World and Me," but it also delves into the theater's past significance in African American culture. While tickets to opening night are unavailable, you can still catch a later showing on the 27th or the 29th. Read More.
"17 Blocks"
A remarkable collaboration between a child and a professional filmmaker, "17 Blocks" follows a family living in a rough neighborhood in Washington D.C. over a 20 year period. The footage in the film mainly comes from the nine-year-old son, Emmanuel Sanford, who shot the everyday happenings in his life using his home camera. He later teamed up with "This American Life" contributor and filmmaker Davy Rothbart, who befriended the family and helped craft the film. Read More.
"Yesterday"
Probably the most buzzed about film at the festival, "Yesterday" is another dreamlike concoction from the marvelous mind of Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire," "Trainspotting"), which imagines what would happen if no one in the world remembered the Beetles – except one man. Expect lots of singing in the audience for this one, which stars newcomer Himesh Patel, and more familiar names Lily James, Kate McKinnon and Ed Sheeran. Read More.
"Dreamland"
Love can lead people to do crazy things. Including risking your neck for a murderous bank robber. Set during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression in Texas, "Dreamland" stars Margot Robbie as a bank robbing felon who attracts the attentions of a young and desperate farmer Eugene Evans (played by Finn Cole). Soon the two of them team up to wreak "Bonnie and Clyde" level havoc on the region. Read More.
"Only"
A mysterious ash falls from the sky. And suddenly, millions of women around the world are dead. This post-apocalyptic love story stars Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr. as a couple who find themselves living in such a world and who must struggle to survive despite the overwhelming odds. Read More.
"Plus One"
Meg Ryan's son with Dennis Quaid, Jack Quaid, is certainly taking up his mother's mantle in this romantic comedy, which is expected to be a supremely charming film about two best friends who promise to be each other's plus ones to the endless series of weddings they are invited to that year. Hijinks and – of course – love, ensue. Read More.
