The Innovative Design of Zaha Hadid
This March we celebrate Women’s History Month. In honor of the occasion, we are highlighting the trailblazing work of the first female winner of prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, Zaha Hadid, by exploring her technical and stylistic innovations in the newly opened 520 West 28th
“As a woman in architecture, you’re always an outsider,” she told the Financial Times in 2015. “It’s okay, I like being on the edge.”
Influenced by parallel practices that surround architecture such as art, urbanism, and design, Hadid creates structures whose lines speak to natural form and contemporary function. This is exceptionally demonstrated throughout 520 West 28th Street, here’s a look at some of Hadid’s distinctive work:
1. The Exterior
The building’s elegant hand-crafted metal façade is driven by one continuous line, which loops its way skywards. These dynamic curves create a distinctive chevron pattern that embraces interlacing levels, maximizing privacy and security between residences. As the chevron weaves up from the ground, its folds create a multi-level design that links residence exteriors and interiors together in one sweeping movement.
2. The Lobby
Sculpted from stone, the lobby’s 34-foot feature wall is transformed into a piece of art.
3. Hadid-Designed Furniture
The lobby and entertainment suite feature custom furniture designed by Zaha Hadid, with the Moon System sofa by B&B Italia featured in the entertainment suite.
4. Robotic Parking Valet
Robotic parking valet expertly tends to residents’ vehicles, parking and retrieving cars on call via an online app.
5. Private IMAX Theater
The building features the only private IMAX theater in NYC with interiors custom designed by Zaha Hadid.
6. Secured Storage
Private automated storage is accessed via the secured viewing room which takes its design inspiration from a Swiss bank vault.
7. Glass!
Full height walls of glass and rounded corner panes maximize light and views in every residence.
8. Easy Indoor/Outdoor Living
Terrace and balcony doors effortlessly slide open at the push of a button, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor space.
9. Sculpted Marble
The unique kitchen island includes sculpted white marble and high-gloss formed millwork, integrating form with the high performing functionality of Boffi’s exclusive top-of-the-line Xila collection.
10. Form Meets Function
Every residence features a custom sculptural element in an elegant opalescent finish, which integrates the functionality of usage spaces with Zaha Hadid’s signature design
