Meet the Artist: Abstract Expressionist Kerry Irvine at High Line Nine

Residents gathered recently for a Speaker Series with New York-based abstract expressionist artist Kerry Irvine. During the exclusive Q&A, Kerry led residents through her creative process and spoke about the inspiration behind her latest collection, “Behind the Veil,” which was featured at High Line Nine gallery in Chelsea.

John Murphy, mixologist at the West Village bar Automatic Slims, opened the evening with drink tutorials, serving up Espresso Martinis and Bourbon Old Fashioned cocktails.

In her artist statement, Kerry has said, "I see a world full of light and color, but also darkness and uncertainty. It is in this place that I seek my truth. This is a solo journey, full of vulnerability and fear. If I allow myself to get to this place and listen to my inner dialogue, my painting can begin. From here, I translate my discoveries. Sometimes the marks are dark, jagged, raw and gritty. Others times, light and fluid; dancing to the rhythm of color."

Her latest collection, "Behind the Veil," incorporates both jagged and fluid elements. Infused with beautiful soft colors, light and mysticism, it explores how her patriarchal Catholic upbringing influenced her artistic and personal growth.
